How the FD Calculator works

A fixed deposit locks a lump sum for a fixed term at a fixed rate. In cumulative mode interest is compounded — quarterly at almost all Indian banks — and paid with the principal at maturity. In payout mode the bank credits simple interest to your account every month or quarter.

Effective yield is higher than the quoted rate because of compounding: 7% compounded quarterly is a 7.19% effective annual yield.

Interest is fully taxable at your slab. Banks deduct 10% TDS when interest in a financial year crosses the threshold; you still owe the balance tax if you are in a higher bracket.

A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t) Monthly payout = P × r ÷ 12

Worked example

  • Deposit amount: ₹5,00,000
  • Interest rate (p.a.): 7%
  • Tenure: 3 Yr
  • Compounding: Quarterly
  • Interest: Cumulative

₹5 lakh at 7% for 3 years compounded quarterly matures at ₹6,15,720 — ₹1,15,720 of interest. Since that is over ₹38,000 a year, the bank deducts 10% TDS (₹11,572) before paying out.
