The new regime: after the standard deduction the taxable income is at or below the 87A threshold, so tax is nil. The old regime would need very large deductions to match.

How the Income Tax Calculator FY 2026-27 works
The new regime has lower slab rates but allows almost no deductions beyond the standard deduction and employer NPS. The old regime keeps 80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest and the rest, at higher slab rates. Which is cheaper depends entirely on how much you can deduct.
The break-even tile answers the question directly: if your old-regime deductions (over and above the standard deduction) exceed that figure, file under the old regime.
Rebate under 87A wipes out tax entirely below the threshold income in each regime, with marginal relief in the new regime just above it.
Tax = Σ (income in slab × slab rate) − rebate 87A + surcharge + 4% cess
Worked example
- Gross annual salary: ₹15,00,000
- 80C (PF, ELSS, PPF, LIC…): ₹1,50,000
- 80D health insurance: ₹25,000
On a ₹15 lakh salary with ₹1.5 lakh in 80C and ₹25,000 of 80D, the new regime is cheaper unless you can add further deductions (HRA, home-loan interest, NPS) beyond the break-even shown above.
