How the PPF Calculator works
PPF is a 15-year government scheme with interest credited annually, computed on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month — so depositing before the 5th earns interest for that month too.
It is EEE: the deposit gets an 80C deduction (old regime), the interest is tax-free and the maturity is tax-free. After 15 years you can extend in 5-year blocks, with or without fresh deposits.
Balance(y) = [ Balance(y−1) + Deposit ] × (1 + r)
- r
- annual PPF rate
Worked example
- Yearly deposit: ₹1,50,000
- PPF interest rate: 7.1%
- Extensions after 15 years: None (15 yrs)
Depositing the maximum ₹1.5 lakh at the start of every year for 15 years at 7.1% builds about ₹40,68,209 — ₹22.5 lakh of deposits and roughly ₹18,18,209 of completely tax-free interest.
