- At least 40% of the corpus must buy an annuity at exit (corpus above ₹5 lakh); up to 60% can be withdrawn tax-free. Annuity income is taxable.
How the NPS Calculator works
NPS contributions are invested in equity, corporate and government bond funds you choose (or an auto lifecycle mix). The calculator compounds your monthly contribution at the expected blended return until age 60.
At exit, a minimum 40% buys an annuity from a life insurer that pays a monthly pension for life; the rest (up to 60%) is withdrawn as a tax-free lump sum. The annuity rate you enter determines the pension.
Tax: 80CCD(1) within the ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit, plus an exclusive ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B) (old regime), plus employer contributions under 80CCD(2) in both regimes.
Corpus = FV of monthly contributions; Pension = Corpus × annuity% × annuity rate ÷ 12
Worked example
- Current age: 30 yrs
- Monthly contribution: ₹5,000
- Expected NPS return (p.a.): 10%
- Share used to buy annuity: 40%
- Annuity rate (p.a.): 6%
₹5,000 a month from age 30 at 10% builds about ₹1.13 crore by 60. Using 40% (₹45 lakh) to buy a 6% annuity gives roughly ₹22,700 a month for life, and ₹68 lakh comes out as a tax-free lump sum.
