How the Inflation Calculator works
Inflation compounds just like interest, but against you. A basket costing ₹100 today costs ₹100 × (1.06)^15 ≈ ₹240 in 15 years at 6%. Equivalently, ₹240 then is worth ₹100 now.
Your investments must beat inflation before they make you richer. A 6% FD in a 6% inflation world preserves purchasing power at best — and less after tax.
Future cost = Today × (1 + π)^n Today's value = Future ÷ (1 + π)^n
- π
- annual inflation
- n
- years
Worked example
- Convert: Today → future cost
- Amount: ₹1,00,000
- Inflation rate (p.a.): 6%
- Years: 15 Yr
Something that costs ₹1 lakh today will cost about ₹2.4 lakh in 15 years at 6% inflation. Put another way, ₹1 lakh loses about 58% of its purchasing power over that period.
