A rough rule is 25–30× your first-year retirement expenses. For ₹1 lakh a month at retirement that is ₹3–3.6 crore. The calculator gives a precise figure for your inflation and return assumptions.

Work backwards from your monthly expenses, inflation and retirement age to the corpus you actually need — and the monthly SIP that gets you there. The drawdown phase, with withdrawals rising every year, is built in.

- Expenses are inflated to retirement and keep rising with inflation every year after; the corpus is sized to reach zero exactly at the planned age.
How the Retirement Calculator works
Step 1 inflates today's expenses to your retirement year. Step 2 finds the corpus from which those (rising) expenses can be withdrawn every month, earning the post-retirement return, until the planned age. Step 3 grows any existing savings to retirement and works out the SIP needed to fill the gap.
Two return assumptions matter: a growth rate while accumulating (equity-heavy) and a lower, safer rate while withdrawing (hybrid/debt).
Expense at retirement = E × (1+π)^n; Corpus solves Σ withdrawals(rising at π) with growth r₂; SIP solves FV(SIP, r₁, n) = Corpus − FV(existing)
- E
- monthly expenses today
- π
- inflation
- n
- years to retirement
- r₁
- pre-retirement return
- r₂
- post-retirement return
Worked example
- Current age: 30 yrs
- Retirement age: 60 yrs
- Plan money to last till age: 85 yrs
- Current monthly expenses: ₹50,000
- Inflation (p.a.): 6%
- Return before retirement (p.a.): 12%
- Return after retirement (p.a.): 8%
₹50,000 of expenses today becomes about ₹2.87 lakh a month at 60. To fund that, rising 6% a year until 85, you need a corpus of roughly ₹6.5 crore — which a monthly SIP of about ₹18,400 for 30 years at 12% can build.
